Reaction time world record

There is no one universal reaction-time record. The answer changes with the signal, the equipment and whether the result includes anticipation or assistance.

Why the “world record” is not a single number

Reaction time is an experimental result. Change the starting signal, input method, timing equipment or rules for anticipation and you have changed the test. Some record categories measure a narrowly defined assisted response; laboratory studies use controlled apparatus; online tools include a screen, browser and consumer input device. Their figures should not be put on one leaderboard.

For a visual browser test, about 101 ms is a useful “extraordinary laboratory response” reference rather than a target to treat as a verified record. A real online score also contains device latency. Very low results can happen through anticipation, timing quirks or a lucky click, which is why a five-attempt average is more informative.

Use records as a prompt, not a verdict

A score of 200 ms on one computer may not equal 200 ms on another. Test the same way each time, look at your average and celebrate progress in consistency. That makes the exercise both more honest and more satisfying.
